How the world's largest lead battery manufacturer found success in Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania’s manufacturing ecosystem is the backbone of our economy. As manufacturing continues to evolve in a competitive global marketplace, the most successful companies are the ones that can innovate with their products and cultivate a skilled and dedicated workforce.

One such company is East Penn Manufacturing (East Penn), a family-owned energy storage manufacturer producing more than 500 types of batteries for vehicles, industrial equipment, telecommunications, and data centers. We spoke with East Penn Manufacturing CEO Pete Stanislawczyk to learn more about their long history in Pennsylvania and how they’ve continued to find success through the years.

Can you describe East Penn’s history in PA?

East Penn’s story begins in 1946 when two Berks County natives, DeLight Breidegam Jr. and his father, DeLight Sr., started their battery business in a one-room creamery in the tiny village of Bowers. They didn’t have a lot of money to start, but they had something more valuable: an entrepreneurial spirit, ingenuity, and a strong work ethic. Over almost 80 years, our company has grown to become a global leader in energy storage while always expanding our capabilities in Berks County – with about 7,900 employees, we’re the largest employer in the county.

Here in Pennsylvania, we’ve grown into the world’s largest single-site lead battery manufacturer – which demonstrates the Commonwealth’s unmatched role in fostering business success and global competitiveness. Our founders certainly had opportunities to move their business headquarters elsewhere, but they chose not to. That would have meant losing the company’s treasured resource: the people in this community. From day one, we’ve drawn from the region’s strong base of manufacturing, technical trades and schools, diverse communities, and unique talents. Even as the company has expanded across the globe, most of our employees are still based in Berks County.

Why are East Penn’s batteries so important in today’s world?

Lead batteries power everything from daily transportation and communications to renewable energy and advanced vehicle technology. At East Penn, our products keep life moving. For example, our Electric Hybrid Performance line supports the growing demand for hybrid and electric vehicles, ensuring dependable performance for these critical systems that are increasingly part of our energy future. Built in Pennsylvania, our batteries not only drive innovation and sustainability but also strengthen local communities by supporting jobs and economic growth.

With so much experience operating here in PA, how would you describe the state as a business destination?

We see Pennsylvania as an outstanding place to do business. We employ thousands of Pennsylvanians who drive our innovation and success. The state’s strong technical schools and training programs provide a steady stream of skilled workers. This has also given East Penn the opportunity to partner with local institutions to form scholarship programs allowing students to earn a degree in a highly skilled trade while working for the company. Pennsylvania’s central location and extensive transportation network give us efficient access to major markets, which strengthens the private fleet we own and operate. With competitive costs, robust workforce partnerships, and unmatched distribution reach, Pennsylvania provides the people, resources, and infrastructure manufacturers like us need to thrive in today’s fast-moving economy.

You mentioned that your employees are your one of your most valuable resources. What has been your experience finding and hiring workers in PA?

We are fortunate to hire so many local, hard-working employees who embody the values of our communities. To strengthen this pipeline, we’ve partnered with local educational programs, including Reading Area Community College, where our Advanced Manufacturing Technology Scholarship fully funds an associate degree in Mechatronic Engineering Technology while providing part-time work and a full-time, great paying job at East Penn upon graduation. We also collaborate with local high schools to offer co-op opportunities for seniors, creating career paths for those pursuing skilled trades right here in Pennsylvania. Initiatives like these have helped us become Berks County’s largest employer and one of the largest employers in Pennsylvania.

What has been your employees’ experience living in PA?

Pennsylvania offers an exceptional balance of opportunity and quality-of-life. Put simply, it’s a place where people can thrive, and that’s a big reason our employees choose to build their lives here. We even have multiple generations of the same families working together, which really shows how much people value the community they have found here. It’s also why we are dedicated to investing in our communities by supporting local schools, workforce programs, and initiatives that help make Pennsylvania an even better place to live and work.

The state provides rewarding career paths, outstanding educational institutions, and nationally recognized healthcare. It is also rich in culture and history, with world-class museums, theaters, and music venues, as well as vibrant city life in places like Philadelphia and Pittsburgh. Many of our employees are outdoor enthusiasts who enjoy year-round recreation across the state’s parks, trails, mountains, and lakes.

What company accomplishments are you most proud of?

From an environmental standpoint, in 1992, East Penn built the industry’s first acid reclamation plant, followed by an on-site employee health and safety center in 1993 and a zero-discharge wastewater treatment plant in 1996 that handles millions of gallons annually.

And we’re also proud to have grown into a family of over 10,000 employees worldwide. We have been recognized by Best Companies Group over 20 times since 2000 as one of the Best Places to Work in Pennsylvania. Forbes has also recognized us among the best employers in the state and given us national recognition as one of the country’s best large employers and employers for women.

How do you envision East Penn’s future over the next 5-10 years?

East Penn’s future will be driven by the growing global demand for energy storage. From vehicle electrification and carbon reduction to advanced communications and the Internet of Things, lead batteries will power tomorrow’s world. We’re preparing for this future with complementary technologies, innovative recycling, and sustainable material solutions. As a privately held, family-owned company, we look forward to continuing reinvesting in Pennsylvania via expanding facilities, strengthening automation, and, most importantly, developing and building our workforce. This long-term focus ensures East Penn remains a trusted innovator and a sustainable leader well into the next decade.

And finally, our mission extends beyond producing world-class batteries. It’s about building a sustainable future. Lead batteries already have the highest recycling rate of any consumer product at 99 percent, yet awareness is critical to sustaining this success. That’s why we launched our Power2Recycle campaign, educating communities on the importance of proper battery recycling and the shared role we all play in a circular economy. From partnerships across the industry to interactive learning exhibits at the Reading Science Center, we’re especially focused on inspiring the next generation to be environmental stewards and ensuring Pennsylvania leads in sustainable energy solutions.
